With species-specific controls and restrictions
on days at sea monitored by the National Marine
Fisheries Service (NMFS), the commercial fishing
industry depends on accurate information transmission
for their livelihood. But just as important is
the vital link Boatracs FMCT Fishing Communication
and Information System provides to connect fishing
boats out at sea to our 24/7/365 Network Communications
Center, ensuring that distress calls are immediately
routed to the U.S. Coast Guard for emergency response.

Optional NMFS-approved vessel monitoring:
Linked electronically to the NMFS monitoring system
to provide a reliable log of positions and days
at sea, Boatracs FMCT is an NMFS-approved Vessel
Monitoring System, playing an important role in
protecting the food supply and restoring the fishing
habitat. Plus, voluntary participants in the VMS
program can get more days at sea.

Boatracs FMCT
Staying in touch at sea: Boatracs’
FMCT not only provides NFMS-approved VMS compliance,
it brings an essential home/family link to commercial fishermen, who are often at sea
for weeks or months at a time. Phone, e-mail,
and fax services let families keep in touch, and
allow fishermen to conduct business with fleet
office and suppliers while at sea.
Secure communications: Boatracs traffic
is fully secure, so fishermen can safely convey
proprietary catch location data not only to
shore, but to partner vessels. Optional services
include daily market fish prices to help fishermen
land their catch at the most profitable times,
as well as updates on weather, news, and sports.
Critical 24/7/365 emergency support: For
commercial fishermen and their families, perhaps
the FMCT’s most important benefit is the
24/7/365 all-weather communications with our Network
Operations Center, able to alert the U.S. Coast
Guard for emergency support for vessels in distress.
In a dramatic
example of the value of Boatracs’
unique round-the-clock live support, four
distress messages from the fishing vessel
Ranger came into our Network Operations
Center at 0254 hours. The last message read,
“Boatracs, we are going down . . .”
We immediately notified the USCG. All other
communication systems had failed, but the
onboard FMCT kept on working, sending lat/long
data that helped the USCG successfully locate
and rescue all seven crewmembers from a
tiny lifeboat in the chilly Atlantic waters. |
